EdTech, what is it?

EdTech in France: an overview

EdTech, which stands for Education and Technology, refers to the use of technology to facilitate learning and improve educational performance. This includes a variety of tools and solutions, from e-learning platforms to interactive educational applications and immersive tools such as virtual and augmented reality. These are known as Edtechs.

In the primary sense of the term, EdTech companies target the BtoG (Business To Government) market, when the buyers of digital educational solutions are schools, colleges and high schools.
Target customers can also be families, on a BtoC model. Edtech can provide students with tools to facilitate their learning throughout their education process, through various channels and channels: digital, e-learning, technology...

More broadly, a project can be said to belong to the EdTech vertical if it touches on the training sector (higher education, or vocational training), and the acquisition of skills.

EdTech aims to make education more accessible, personalized and effective. With the advent of digital technology, and especially since the pandemic, Edtech has grown significantly, transforming traditional teaching and learning methods and opening up new avenues for education at all levels. Edtech applies to online courses and training, as well as to digital e-learning platforms.

Bringing technology into education

So what are the current applications of educational technology? Here are a few digital learning tools that offer teachers new teaching methods:

  • Online learning platforms: These platforms enable students to access courses and educational resources remotely, facilitating self-paced, autonomous learning. Examples include Coursera, Khan Academy, and Moodle.
  • Learning management systems (LMS): Tools like Blackboard and Canvas help educators create, manage and deliver educational content, and track student progress.
Adaptive and personalized technologies: These technologies use artificial intelligence to adapt learning content to the individual needs of learners, improving educational effectiveness.
  • Serious games and gamification: The integration of playful elements into education to engage and motivate students, making learning more interactive and enjoyable.
  • Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR): These immersive technologies are used to create engaging and interactive learning experiences, enabling students to practice skills in a simulated environment without risk.
  • Collaboration tools: Platforms such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams enable students and teachers to collaborate in real time, facilitating communication and remote group work.
  • Open Educational Resources (OER): These resources, freely available on the Internet, enable wider access to quality educational materials at no extra cost.
  • Video tutorials and MOOCs: Educational videos and online courses open to all offer democratized access to education, enabling anyone to take university-level courses free of charge.
  • Online assessment tools: These enable fast, efficient assessment of students' skills and offer instant feedback.
  • Interactive whiteboards and IoT tools: Interactive whiteboards and other connected devices enhance classroom interaction and enrich the learning experience.

Understanding the application of technology in education enables us to understand the scope of possibilities for teaching and learning through more flexible, accessible and personalized methods.

Bringing technology into education

How do you launch an EdTech startup in France?

If you have a project encompassing EdTechs, it's first and foremost because you and your company have identified a specific problem or need in the education sector, and believe that technology can solve it.

This may concern access to education, personalization of learning, student engagement, or even the effectiveness of teaching methods, monitoring of skills acquisition, pedagogical methods, classroom issues, online training...

Access to the BtoB market is sometimes complex in France: you need to sell to Academies, Local Authorities, Regions... Finding pilot partners for a “POC” (Proof of Concept) will therefore be one of the first key steps in the development of your EdTech solution. Once you've tested your market with a number of partners, and had your solution tested in real-life conditions with your target users and customers, your company will increase its chances of bringing its EdTech product to market.

In BtoC, EdTech companies aiming to sell their product to families should note that they need to reach a wide audience to maximize their sales. You can rely on influencers, or develop a communications plan focusing on social networks and press relations.

It's not uncommon for EdTechs start-ups to develop a complementary offer dedicated to the BtoB (Business To Business) market, and thus to private companies, in order to develop an additional income stream.

EuraTechnologies incubates EdTech startups

Being incubated within the EdTech vertical at Euratechnologies means above all benefiting from a network. We're talking about the “Euratechnologies ecosystem”, which includes our mentors, our corporate partners, our startup managers, a host of investment funds and banks, our communications department, the companies located within Euratechnologies and in the surrounding area... To be supported by Euratechnologies is to gain time in the development of your company to become one of the key players in EdTech.

The incubation program includes support from a Startup Manager specialized in the EdTech business vertical, access to a network of experts and mentors specialized in education and training, and access to a program of events specific to pedagogy, education and training. Our Partnerships department can also put you in touch with companies that could represent future customers.
Joining the Euratech ecosystem also means taking part in Edtech events such as :

  • Meetups with the EDTech Hauts-de-France association
  • The Learning Expedition with the "Passerelles"
  • Participation of some SUs in the Norbert Ségard prize
  • The Euratechnologies interpromo meetup

It also means being in close contact with other EdTech incubates. This is the case with Cantoo Scribe, a robust, integrated solution perfectly adapted to the educational needs of primary, middle and high school students. This toolbox was developed in close collaboration with occupational therapists, as well as parents and children suffering from DYS disorders, to ensure an adapted response to their specific needs.

Within the EdTech vertical, we support around 40 start-ups a year.

For entrepreneurs wishing to join the EdTech incubation or acceleration program, prepare your Pitch Deck and fill in our application form.
